Community Livability
All our residents, young and old, deserve to be safe on our streets and in their homes. Our streets and sidewalks should be clean, well lit and in good repair. The foreclosure crisis brings opportunities to encourage homeownership and create of high quality and affordable rental housing. Working together we can keep making the neighborhoods of the 6th Ward better, even in tough times.
Neighborhood Revitalization Program (NRP)
Four years ago the future of NRP was uncertain; state law ends the funding and local agreements end the governance in 2010. Going forward into Phase 3 of NRP we now have a $120 million dollars to invest in our neighborhoods over the next 10 years. Neighborhoods will still spend their own funds on their own priorities. Neighborhood organizations will have broader input over all of the city’s operations and be more transparent and accountable to our taxpayers.
Environment
Our part of the city suffers most when it comes to environmental contamination. Recently the proposed Midtown burner and currently the Xcel high voltage power line threaten the health and viability of our neighborhoods. Let’s keep working together to clean up the contamination here and prevent more in the future.
Reopen Nicollet Avenue
We have made significant progress toward correcting this mistake that divides our neighborhood and inhibits redevelopment. In the coming years we’ll work together to see this important community corridor restored and new development bringing jobs and housing to our neighborhood launched.
Green Jobs
A theme of work going forward will be “jobs, jobs, jobs”. We in the core city are set to take advantage of the federal stimulus funds to create green jobs and train our people to take then. Also, the city needs to better support small businesses, where the bulk of new, green jobs will be created. |
